Due: March 8, 2018
Length: 750-1,000 words
For your first short paper, you will choose one important frame from one of the following films:
- Life Is Beautiful
- The Godfather
- Harold and Maude
- Apocalypse Now
- To Kill a Mockingbird
(Obviously, you may not choose a frame that has been discussed in class or discussed in Blog Post #1.)
Analyze the frame according to the elements we discussed in class and their relationship in the context of what you know about mise en scene. That is, you must note the camera angle, camera distance, composition, point-of-view, color, lighting, etc. You should also note any important props in the frame and their relationship to other elements found within the composition of the frame.
Based upon your analysis, you must explain how/why that frame is important. How does it contribute to the shot and scene in which it is found? How does it contribute to the understanding of the film as a whole?
The paper will be assessed according to the demonstrated ability to properly use and apply the language of film analysis, the depth and detail of the analysis, the ability to place the frame in the context of the film, its theme, its characters, its setting, etc., and of course, stylistic and grammatical concerns.
Your paper must include the frame itself (use your phone if you have to) and the exact time in the film at which the frame appears. The frame should be in color, if possible, but must be in color if you will be discussing the color and/or lighting.
Do not do any external research on the film. This paper should be entirely your analysis and interpretation.
